In 2011 I had the privilege of spending three weeks in Nepal. Two weeks trekking with 3 Sisters Adventure Trekking – Empowering Women of Nepal (EWN) and one week in Kathmandu. As a foreigner traveling alone I was a bit apprehensive as to what I would come across. My fears all subsided when I was picked up at the Kathmandu airport by some of the warmest people I have ever met. I immediately felt a sense of calm and knew that I would be well taken care of. This feeling continued as I met so many loving people along the way, Rajeev, the jewelry store owner, who shut down his shop to help me find a lost bank card, rickshaw drivers who rode tirelessly hauling me to the many sites, Young porters who warmed my cold hands in theirs when I was sure I had frostbite so close to base camp, the guide who dried my tears and found a phone for me to call home because I missed my daughters and was home sick….the list goes on and on. I was so touched as to how these people could have so little yet be so happy and willing to give whatever they did have.
My heart has been heavy hearing stories about the trauma caused by the resent earthquakes but I know they will hold each other up and make it through. My dream would be to go back to Nepal and help in their efforts to rebuild but as many factors prevent that from happening right now I feel like the least I could do is send some money to EWN to help in their efforts in the small mountain villages. I have personally met Archana, who is in charge of receiving and distributing donations and I trust that her intentions are pure and the money will go where it is most needed.
